I hope you are doing well — relatively speaking.

I wish I could say that after taking a month off from Circulo that I’m all refreshed and energised.

But life had another plan and it ended up being a crazy busy month instead.

This month’s newsletter is therefore shorter than usual.

My main intention is to check-in, and let you know that my thoughts are with all of you as we navigate the currents of our lives — individually and collectively.

TED Circles

I’m planning to host two TED Circles this month on the topics of Shifting Mindsets and Making Changes.

These…

It’s been a hectic six months for Circulo.

While most of the world is in lockdown, Circulo had gone from an idea, to design/prototype, to launch, to hosting weekly events.

Those of you who‘ve joined us would be familiar with how silences are also part of our conversations. As we sit with this “in-between” space, we allow the “what is” or “what next” to express itself. Which is why Circulo is taking a strategic pause in September — to rejuvenate, recuperate, and reimagine.

I’ve curated a list of other online goodies to share with you instead.

But before that, I’d…

Reflections and learnings from my #30daychallenge

[Day 30 of #30dayschallenge]

It’s a bit bittersweet to get to the final day of my challenge.

There is a sense of elation because I no longer have a self-imposed deadline — like a clock constantly ticking in the background.

There is also a sense of sadness that something is ending.

But it is what it is. So let’s wrap it up shall we?

The Results

I‘ve crunched the numbers — turns out that my #30dayschallenge took 43 days to complete.

There were 13 days in which I didn’t write an article — resulting in a…

Could it be because life has a better plan?

[Day 29 of #30dayschallenge]

What a year 2020 has been.

It charted its own course and pushed aside everyone’s plans.

So what do you do when things don’t go to plan?

Changing plans would be a good place to start.

But humans are a funny mob — we like to be in control.

Or more accurately, we like to think that we are in control.

Many of our stresses would disappear if we could accept the reality that we were never in control.

A Rejection Note

I received a rejection note for an article…

Why being alive is a gift — and how it is a gift that keeps giving.

[Day 18 of #30dayschallenge]

Last night after work, I was helping out a friend test out an idea/prototype.

It involved me donating some time and having a conversation on the phone with a stranger by answering a number of pre-set questions.

One of the questions that we were asked to discuss was to describe a gift we’ve been given, either physical or emotional.

As I reflect on that question, I keep coming back to how life itself is a gift.

Being alive seems to…

Because the vast majority of people don’t put their ideas into action.

[Day 28 of #30dayschallenge]

My inspiration for today’s post is a comment made by Julia Steel on a LinkedIn post:

You know what they call an idea without action? A memory.

It’s not enough to just be inspired.

That’s just a spark.

It fizzles out quickly.

The magic happens when you take action.

The Zero Marginal Cost Society

In 2014, the way that I looked at the world changed after I read Jeremy Rikin’s book — The Zero Marginal Cost Society.

Rifkin uncovers a paradox at the heart of capitalism. He predicted that…

How to embrace our uniqueness, practise our scales and level up in life.

[Day 27 of #30dayschallenge]

Today’s article is inspired by a YouTube clip that my brother sent me yesterday, of a pianist playing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” — but in seven different ways ranging from Level 0 to Level 7.

It’s absolutely brilliant and I highly encourage that you watch the four minute clip to get the full context of what I’ll be discussing next.

As the world continues to grapple with the effects of a prolonged COVID-19 situation and Lockdown 2.0, many of my recent conversations…

There are two types of people in the world — the type that talks about doing the work and the type that actually do the work. I don’t waste time with the former.

[Day 26 of #30dayschallenge]

There’s two types of people in the world — the type that talks about doing the work, and the type that actually takes action.

Maybe it’s part of getting older, but I’m more judicious about the time that I have: I don’t waste my energy anymore with people that don’t walk their talk.

Because I know that even though they say that they…

Reflections on changes and leadership skills for current COVID-19 and post-COVID environment. Part 4 discusses how everyone plays a part.

[Day 25 of #30dayschallenge]

Today is the final part of a four-part series that was inspired by an UNSW Business School alumni event which I attended, on the Business of Recovery.

During the Q&A part of the session, all the panel-members answered a question about how to deal with all the uncertainties that COVID-19 has unleashed.

Even though they all gave different responses, what stuck with me is how they are also the same — i.e. …

Reflections on changes and leadership skills required in current COVID-19 and post-COVID environment. Part 3 discusses complexity science and sensemaking.

[Day 24 of #30dayschallenge]

In Part 2 of this series, I discussed the emerging forms of organising that are better suited than the traditional hierarchy to deal with fast-changing environments.

The nature of change is that you don’t get there in one step — there is going to be a transitionary phase when things are going to look messy and uncertain, and also where creative solutions get unleashed.

The likely scenarios that most existing business would face is one where…
